The precise year that the turntable at Coalport had been installed is shrouded in obscurity. Although Coalport came into being during the early 1870s, a CNJ site plan of the area dated July 21, 1902, indicates no turntable or engine service area. The later United States Railroad Administration sponsored evaluation study, site plan dated June 30, 1918 (the source of this drawing), shows a 70-foot turntable, water tank, ash pit and associated tracks. It is, therefore, reasonable to conclude that the engine service facility was installed between 1902 and 1918. During 1919, however, a 100-foot  turntable was installed at Coalport to permit the turning of the ten, new, heavy 2-8-2's allocated to the CNJ by the USRA. The turntable across the river at  Mauch Chunk Engine Terminal had been too small (70 feet in diameter) and situated in an area too confined to permit the construction of a larger turntable. In December 1945 Coalport Turntable No. 3 was removed and reinstalled in a new location at the west end of the Mauch Chunk engine house. The original, 70-foot, Mauch Chunk turntable - at the old location - was removed.
