Another CNJ steam motive power picture book? No, not just "another" - "THE" CNJ steam motive power book! Since Warren B. Crater's outstanding Locomotives 1-999 of the Jersey Central (Railroadians of America - 1970) there have been several volumes published presenting CNJ motive power that, while entertaining and invaluable for their photographic content, have not offered the CNJ motive power enthusiast and modeler accurate, in-depth, historically information. Understanding and modeling a railroad's motive power is a time line of facts, data, equipment, modifications, and painting specifications. As rail enthusiasts from Missouri will attest, "Show Me" is a more reliable axiom than "Tell Me." Well, Central Railroad Company of New Jersey Steam Motive Power 1935-1956 tells you and then, also, "Shows You!" Research began with tabular data presented in Locomotives 1-999 of the Jersey Central. A few minor errors were corrected, information added from official CNJ locomotive data books (1930, 1945, 1950), hundreds of photographs analyzed, and interviews conducted with a few who experienced the mystique of CNJ steam firsthand to prepare this initial volume. Yes, this first volume of a series of five volumes covering CNJ steam, diesels, passenger cars, freight cars, and caboose/work equipment. Definitive volumes? That's for you to decide. This is, however, "definitively not" a collector's volume. It is for serious CNJ steam aficionados and modelers. Your are paying for quality information and quality photographs; not fancy stitch-binding, gold inlaid hard covers with artistic dust jackets, nor are you paying mega dollars for commercial, murky dark, color photographs complimented by puerile and erroneous information. There is very little CNJ history recorded in color. Color photography came about too late to capture the halcyon days of steam railroading and can only offer a wisp of the grandeur that was once CNJ steam. Central Railroad Company of New Jersey Steam Motive Power 1935-1956 is a no nonsense, black & white, soft cover, spirally bound booklet with plastic comb (to lay flat when opened). If you care about the height of CNJ steam locomotive development, you won't be disappointed. 120 pages overflowing with 300 photographs, tables, charts, drawings, and detailed information.
