Hauto Tunnel opened to traffic in 1872 and enabled
Panther Valley Railroad coal trains to connect with the CNJ at
Hauto. The portal at this end of the tunnel was cut stone, very unlike the
blasted rock opening on the Lansford side. - northward

The LC&N Hauto Coal Storage Plant and yard was
erected at the turn of the century to even out irregularities in the supply of
Old Company's Lehigh coal due to demand, weather, and miner's strikes.
The facility could store up to 360,000 tons of coal. -
