HELICOPTER FLIGHT - A COOL WAY TO TRAVEL

HOLD CURSOR ON THUMBNAIL FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The heliport, or rotary-wing airfield as it was also called, spanned the entire width of the north perimeter. In this view taken from above the heliport, most of Dong Tam lies to the south between the heliport and the Song My Tho.

Construction at Dong Tam began at the Song My Tho and progressed northward. By 1969 the southernmost 400 acres had been fully developed. Throughout 1969 until the Division's withdrawal, improvements continued northward. Prior to expansion project, the heliport bordered the north perimeter. Expansion extended the berm beyond the original berm and created the illusion of two north perimeters.

There were separate aviation compounds for helicopter companies along the south side of the heliport. Each compound was accessible by a wide entrance driveway and included barracks, mess halls, offices, and hangars. View #8 - This section of the flight-line was a few yards west of the driveway into the 9th Aviation Battalion area. In the distance an Eagle Flight consisting of four Slicks heads westward. The parked 242nd ASHC Chinook sits at the right rear. The 242nd ASHC was the medium helicopter company of the 269th CAB. View #9 - Two radio-equipped, 1/4-ton, utility trucks await the arrival of a VIP while a Jayhawk Loach lifts off. View #10 - During the day the heliport was a busy place. In this view a 9th Aviation Battalion Slick (behind the large sign at the right) revs up while in the distance another Slick lifts off. View #11 - The 9th Aviation Battalion Slick in view #10 has gained enough revs of its turbojet to lift off the ground. Companies A and B, 9th Aviation Battalion, helicopters displayed a small 9th Infantry Division color Octofoil on their nose cowlings or fuselages. View #12 - A Huey AH-1G Cobra has had dolly wheels slid under its skids and is being towed to the hangar area by a 3/4-ton cargo truck.

For a short time after the 162nd AHC joined the 214th CAB in March 1969, their aircraft displayed the tail-boom unit designator of their previous unit - the 11th CAB.
