Approximately 12,000 helicopters were utilized by all services in the Vietnam War. Of this total number, approximately 5,100 were destroyed. The US Army lost 2,246 helicopters from hostile causes and another 2,075 helicopters from malfunction or accident. Helicopters were dangerous machines to operate in or out of combat.
