Orders came down sending me TDY to the United States Marksmanship Training Unit at Fort Benning, Georgia. My mission was to attend the 1968 Service Rifle and Service Pistol Instructor Clinic. This one caught me unaware. I had my hands full doing my administration job and playing funeral details for the 80th Army Band. I asked my office supervisor, a warrant officer, what this was about. He told me that the Army wanted pistol marksmanship teams formed on all Army installations and I was one of several choices to organize and train a team. The Army's decision had been based upon information in my 201 File. I was the only draftee (US) being sent. Everybody else was an enlistee (RA). I was flattered but the course was a lot of work. The manual was only 8 pages short of being 600 pages! We had only five days to read and study the entire book. Background Sound: "Gunshot" |
